Workshop dry-run: Achievement unlocked!
Thanks to the Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue, Jay and I had a dry run of the Translating Dog workshop yesterday! We were able to give the workshop for free to GGLRR’s staff, fosters, and recent adopters in trade for a little patience as we worked out the kinks.
I also handed out questionnaires on areas to improve, what they liked, what was awkward, what they’d like to see more of, etc, and got some good feedback that we’ll work into the April 22nd workshop.
We had a whopping 30 people and 7 dogs, plus Doc, Roxy, and Daisy (the latter two I borrowed from clients), as well as Neo and Monty (Jay’s doggie helpers) so that people who didn’t bring dogs could practice. The workshop in April should be fantastic!
Jay also brought a filmography friend, Cody, who loaned us some of his equipment and filmed for several hours. I’m looking forward to see what’ll come out of that.
Some of my favorite bits:
- Getting a super sharp recall out of two different dogs who, moments before, had no intention of coming when called.
- Dissecting videos of dog interactions, and listening to people go, “oh! I get it now!” or similar things. Even better: it was said under peoples’ breath, like they were happily surprised at an a-ha moment.
- Watching Jay work with the group on walking skills.
And, I admit, the bit where I had a 20-minute break in my quiet car, cuddling with my dog, was pretty good, too. 😉
Now I’m wondering how to strengthen my vocal cords, because man, my voice is nearly gone!
I also think we definitely need a retreat. There’s so much more I could have covered, but I knew it was info overload as it was, and it was a long day. (Changing up the format a little will help in April.) (Plus, we’ll have a fenced yard to work with off-leash skills for dogs who are ready for that.)
The nice thing in April is that we’re holding it in lovely Pescadero, on the ocean, and people can stay Saturday night and enjoy Sunday, if they feel so inclined!
I’ll only have about ten spots in April (depending on number of dogs), so I’m guessing that when it starts filling up, it’ll fill up fast!
